The Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) consists of licensed amateurs who have voluntarily registered their qualifications and equipment for communications duty in the public service when disaster strikes.
Every licensed amateur, regardless of membership in ARRL or any local club, is eligible for membership in Minnesota ARES. The primary qualification is a sincere desire to serve local communities when normal telecommunications infrastructure fails.
While emergency-powered portable transceivers and mobile VHF/UHF units are highly desirable, possession of specialized equipment is not required to join and complete basic ARES training modules.
